EASTERN CIRCUIT MKOMANZI AND SAADANI NATIONAL PARKS
The eastern circuit of Tanzania include Mkomazi and Sadaani National Parks. These are the newest national parks in Tanzania and so are less visited and famous than the other parks in the rest of the country. They are more private and secluded than other parks and are rife with specialties that can be found nowhere else. They are well worth a visit!
Mkomazi National Park it's also the newest of Tanzania's national parks. The park lies between the mountains and the Indian Ocean. The rhinoceros sanctuary in Mkomazi National Park is one of the most interesting places to visit. While you are here you can see endangered black rhinos, endangered wild dog as well as many other species such as giraffe, eland, hartebeest, zebra, buffalo, elephant and the long necked gerenuk. Bird spotting is excellent with more than 450 avian species recorded including endemics such as the cobalt-chested vulturine guinea-fowl and other large ground birds such as ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird and ground hornbill. Migratory species are also present here such as the Eurasian roller.
Sadaani National Park is the only place where you can encounter some of the larger species of wildlife while wandering down a sandy beach. In Saadani it's the only park in which the beach meets the bush. It is the only wildlife sanctuary in East Africa with a beach front on the Indian Ocean, and it possesses beautiful tropical coastline that is popular with sunbathers. A wide range of grazing animals is commonly seen on game drives and walks through the park. These include giraffe, buffalo, warthog, waterbuck, reedbuck, hartebeest, wildebeest, greater kudu, eland, sable, yellow baboon, and vervet monkey. Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in the diversity of life to be seen in Saadani. Herds of up to 30 elephants are encountered with increasing frequency, and several lion prides are resident, together with leopard, spotted hyena and black-backed jackal. Boat trips on the mangrove-lined Wami River come with a high chance of sighting hippos, crocodiles and a selection of marine and riverine birds, including the mangrove kingfisher and lesser flamingo, while the beaches form one of the last major green turtle breeding sites on mainland Tanzania.
